The Admiralty Restoration — Delivery Process

Restoration work on a heritage building lives or dies by the accuracy of its materials, and nowhere was this more evident than on the Admiralty Restoration. Long before a single tool touched the building, our sourcing team undertook an exhaustive review of the original architectural record — historic drawings, surviving fragments, period photographs, and conservation surveys — to establish exactly what the building had originally contained, down to the specific quarry a stone likely came from and the joinery details a Victorian craftsman would have used without a second thought.

This record became the reference point against which every material decision was measured. Rather than approximating a “similar” stone or a “close enough” timber species, we treated the archival record as a specification in its own right, one that carried as much authority as any modern drawing package. Where the original record identified a specific limestone bed, we sourced from quarries still working that same geological seam wherever possible — a level of precision that matters enormously to how a repaired section eventually weathers alongside the surrounding original fabric.

Timber sourcing followed an equally disciplined path. The building’s original joinery relied on slow-grown oak with a density and grain pattern that modern fast-grown plantation timber simply cannot replicate. Sourcing genuinely comparable material meant working with a small number of specialist suppliers who deal specifically in reclaimed and sustainably certified slow-grown hardwood, often waiting considerably longer for the right timber than a conventional programme would allow.

Metal fittings and ironmongery presented their own sourcing challenge. Where original fittings survived, they were carefully catalogued, restored, and reinstated. Where replacement was unavoidable, patterns were taken directly from surviving originals and cast by UK foundries still using traditional methods, ensuring new ironmongery matched not just the visual appearance but the weight and finish of pieces installed over a century earlier.

Every sourced material was logged against the original architectural record in a running document shared with the client and, where required, the relevant conservation authority — creating full traceability from archive to installation. This documentation later proved invaluable during compliance sign-off, giving conservation officers direct evidence that every material decision had been made with reference to the building’s authentic history rather than convenient substitution.

What this sourcing discipline ultimately protected was something less tangible than any single material choice: the building’s authenticity as a continuous historical record rather than a modern reconstruction wearing a heritage appearance. A restoration built on approximated materials might look convincing on completion day, but tends to age poorly, weathering unevenly against original fabric and revealing the substitution within a matter of years. Sourced correctly, as it was here, new and original material age together — meaning the Admiralty Restoration should, decades from now, read as a single continuous structure rather than a building with a visible seam where the past ends and the restoration begins.
