Bronze fittings occupy a small but disproportionately important place in heritage refurbishment. A door handle, window stay, or stair balustrade fitting is often the first and last thing a hand touches in a room — and in a period property, it’s also one of the most visible signals of whether a restoration has been done with genuine care or simply approximated.
Original bronze ironmongery in Georgian and Victorian properties was rarely mass-produced to a single pattern. Handles, hinges, and escutcheons were frequently cast to match a specific building’s proportions, then hand-finished by craftsmen whose individual technique left subtle variation in every piece. Sourcing off-the-shelf “heritage style” hardware for a genuine restoration almost always produces a visible mismatch — slightly wrong proportions, a finish too uniform, a weight that feels hollow in the hand compared to solid cast originals.
Our approach begins with the fittings already in the building, wherever they survive. Original bronze ironmongery is carefully removed, cleaned, and assessed before any decision is made to restore or replace. Where restoration is viable, pieces are stripped of old lacquer and built-up patina, repaired where cracked or worn, and refinished to match the property’s original character rather than polished to a uniform modern shine that period bronze never had.
Where replacement is unavoidable — missing pieces, fittings damaged beyond repair, or new openings requiring hardware that never existed — we work with a small number of UK foundries who still cast bronze using traditional sand-casting methods, capable of replicating a surviving original piece almost exactly. Patterns are taken directly from existing hardware in the building wherever possible, ensuring new fittings sit convincingly alongside the old rather than standing out as an obvious later addition.
Finish is where the real craftsmanship shows. Bronze develops its character through age and handling — a soft, uneven patina that no factory finish can convincingly replicate straight out of production. We specify hand-finishing and, where appropriate, accelerated ageing techniques that bring new bronze fittings into visual harmony with surrounding original ironmongery, rather than leaving a jarring contrast between old and new.
The investment this requires is not insignificant, but the alternative — generic reproduction hardware — undermines a restoration in a way clients often notice only after the fact, once the rest of the property has been returned to its original standard. Bronze fittings are small in scale but large in impact: get them right, and a room feels authentically restored; get them wrong, and even the most careful architectural work can read as slightly compromised.
